POTTSVILLE - Attorneys for the Schuylkill County Commissioners and Controller Melinda Kantner will meet with county Judge Charles Miller this Friday, September 3rd, for a pre-hearing conference on a writ of mandamus complaint filed against Kantner earlier last week. The mandamus was filed Monday because, according to the commissioners, Kantner refused and continues to refuse to complete two state-mandated county financial reports. Those reports, as well as an audit of county books, were due July 1. The Republican Herald reports, Kantner has blamed the county's external auditor, Pottsville accountant Sam Deegan, for the delay, while Deegan and many county officials have blamed Kantner. The mandamus - a civil lawsuit which could go to trial if the two sides cannot resolve differences - would force Kantner to complete the reports within 30 days and would also order her to fully cooperate with Deegan and give him whatever financial documents he needs within 30 days. Meanwhile, county officials have set Sept. 30 as the new target date to have both reports and the audit completed. Commissioners say every day the reports are late, the county's bond rating, reputation with outside vendors and potential loans are at risk.

WINFIELD - Wanting to do something good and share the love of God, that was the motive behind a little girl's endeavor Friday and Saturday August 27th and 28th at her rural Winfield home. The weather cooperated, and the fact that her family and neighbors had community yard sales, drew folks to her home. Six-year-old Haley Berge along with the help of her mommy and a little neighbor boy sold lemonade and cookies at their yard sale and all the proceeds were going to the Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville. Haley says her lemonade and chocolate chips cookies were yummy, as she sold the treats from a lemonade stand built by her "Pop." (Grandfather) Haley's mother, Jeanette Berge says, Haley came up with the idea of a lemonade stand and giving the proceeds to sick kids on her own. Jeanette says she supported Haley's idea as they were discussing doing good things for other people and sharing God's love through those good deeds. Haley's mom talked with her about the Children's Miracle Network Marathon put on each year to support the Janet Weis Children's Hospital, so Jeanette suggested that Haley put up a stand at their yard sale. Haley says she was excited to help raise money to help the sick kids get medicine. The turnout was great, and the generosity of folks was greater as Haley raised over $107 through her efforts. Jeanette says they both set a goal of $100 dollars for the Janet Weis Hospital and Haley was happy that they met that goal and more.

HARRISBURG - A Pennsylvania agency says it's considering enforcement action after 41 of 74 companies drilling for Marcellus shale natural gas missed a deadline to report their wells' production. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said Friday that it will contact the companies that missed the Aug. 15 deadline and pursue whatever enforcement action it deems necessary. Nine of the 41 companies submitted reports after the deadline. DEP Secretary John Hanger says he's troubled by the level of noncompliance. A new state law forces gas companies to report production totals every six months. Those reports, and a list of the companies that didn't report, are being posted on the agency's website.
